THE PAUL AND PAULINE SCHMID STORY
My mother, Clara, and I (Bonnie) went to Aunt Pauline's funeral in April,
1996, and we got to talking about old times. Uncle Paul handed me a
little box. I opened the box and inside was a gold pocket watch. I said
it reminded me of my Grandpa's watch....and how as I child I always asked
Grandpa if I could hear it tick. Uncle Paul said sure enough it was my
Grandpa's watch. I tell you it brought tears to my eyes. He then
said the pocket watch was mine. (The watch still runs!)
Uncle Paul asked me if I knew what he paid for it. I said I really had
no idea. He then proceeded to tell me the following story.
Uncle Paul had been a bartender in Chicago in the early 1940s. One of his regular customers was a man named Joe. This man sold real estate and always drove a fairly new Packard. This Joe also owned a gold pocket watch. Uncle Paul always admired it. One day Joe came into the bar and showed Uncle Paul his new wrist watch. This man had never owned a wrist watch before. Joe was so proud of his wrist watch. Uncle Paul looked at the wrist watch and asked this man what he had done with the gold pocket watch. This Joe said it was at home in drawer. Uncle Paul asked him what he planned on doing with the pocket watch. Joe said he didn't know and Uncle Paul jokingly said he'd give him a couple of dollars for it. A few weeks later, Joe came into the bar and threw the pocket watch on the counter and said to Uncle Paul "Here's the pocket watch - where's your $2.00." So Uncle Paul gave this man $2.00 for the pocket watch. This was in 1946. Uncle Paul then gave the pocket watch to my Grandpa. Grandpa had never owned a watch before. Grandpa cherished it very much. Grandpa wore it every day - unless he was working in the garden. After Grandpa died, Grandma gave the pocket watch to Uncle Paul. But the funny thing is, she gave the watch chain and fob to Uncle Frank. (My mother, Clara, thinks the chain and fob was lost in the fire at Uncle Frank's farm.)
